Community Need Statement
The Washington D.C. Metro area faces a persistent crisis of food insecurity and hygiene poverty, particularly among individuals experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, and economic instability. According to recent regional data, thousands of families struggle to access nutritious food and basic toiletries—resources essential to health, dignity, and survival.
Why This Need Is Significant
•     Food Insecurity: Many residents live in food deserts with limited access to affordable, healthy options. This disproportionately affects low-income households, single-parent families, and those in transitional housing.
•     Hygiene Poverty: Lack of access to toiletries like soap, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products contributes to poor health outcomes and social stigma, especially for those living in shelters or on the streets.
•     Vulnerable Populations: Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault often flee unsafe environments with little more than the clothes on their backs. Immediate access to food and hygiene support is critical during these transitions.
•     Youth Disconnection: Underserved youth in these communities frequently lack mentorship and emotional support, leading to cycles of low self-esteem and limited opportunity.
